Figure Montage

• These images are photographic montages. Originally simply sandwiching 2 slides in one mount and projecting, I learned the technique from Freeman Patterson and Andre’ Gallant through their books and workshops. They suggested overexposing a texture or pattern to be used as an overlay with a base image. In 2005 I was the first person in any of their workshops to apply this technique with the human form as the base image.
  
  Since then I have continued to work with this concept and have translated the process from slide film to digital. With Photoshop I can replicate the effect of simple slide sandwiches and much more. Using complex layering, masking and blending techniques I can obtain images only dreamed of in the darkroom.
  
  Artistically, I began using the montages to explore the relationships between humans and the environment, both natural and man made. As the body of work progresses, I am expressing more abstract concepts such as dependency and aging. The montage of expressive textures with the main image is more than the sum of its parts. It conveys moods and emotions not evident in the individual images, transforming them into something new and transcendent.
